GoPro Hero (2024)
GoPro is mostly known for it's premium action cameras but the GoPro Hero (2024) is a budget camera, offering 4K video at a modest price, half of the price of their latest GoPro Hero 13 Black.
The Hero (2024) is very budget friendly, but the low price comes with many concessions, resulting in a very simple camera, great for beginners, but with limited functionality, which might turn off power users.
Main features of the GoPro Hero (2024)
- 4K video The Hero (2024) offers 4K 30fps video or 2.7k 60fps video and 12MP photos. There are only 3 modes, simple but efficient.
- Lens guard The Hero (2024) has replaceable water repellent lens guards, keeping your lens safe from danger.
- Foldable mounting fingers It is ready to be used with the many GoPro accessories thanks to the same mounting fingers as it's big brother, the GoPro Hero 13 Black.
Reasons to buy the GoPro Hero (2024)
- Proven quality & versatile GoPro is the leading action camera brand and is known for it's high quality, rugged and capable cameras. Even if it is a budget camera, the GoPro Hero (2024) delivers good quality footage and is a solid choice.
- Lightweight The Hero (2024) only weighs 3.03oz / 86g, half the weight of the GoPro Hero 13 Black and other premium GoPros. This makes the Hero (2024) a great camera for mounting on a helmet for mountain-bike-mtb or even road-cycling-bike, but also good for use on a selfie stick.
- Simple and straightforward The Hero (2024) only offers three modes, 4K video, 2.7k video and photo mode. It's dead simple and great for beginners.
- Many accessories Buying a GoPro action camera gives you access to a wide range of quality accessories, but also, thanks to the universal mount, you can buy many third party accessories to make the best of you camera.
Reasons to avoid the GoPro Hero (2024)
- Limited functonality Power users who want control over their camera and tweak settings for each use case will not be satisfied with the lack of settings and customization offered by the Hero (2024). If you want control and advanced settings at a similar price point, you should consider the GoPro Hero 10 Black, which while and older action camera, delivers better performance than the Hero (2024).
- Only waterproof 16ft / 5m The Hero (2024) is waterproof, but only down to 16ft / 5m, and there is no diving case available for it. This makes it an option for watersports and snorkeling, but not for scuba-diving. You could consider a GoPro Hero 11 Black, Insta360 Ace Pro or DJI Osmo Action 4 which all offer diving cases for depths down to 164ft / 50m or more.
- Non removeable battery The battery is integrated and cannot be replaced, meaning that you cannot buy several and switch them on the go to capture all day long. You could consider using a power bank in some situations, but the integrated battery is a drawback for many use cases. If you need removeable batteries, you could consider the Insta360 Ace or the DJI Osmo Action 3 which are at similar pricepoints.
- No onboard image stabilization The Hero (2024) does not do image stabilization itself, but it can be applied in the GoPro companion app, the Quik App. The GoPro Hero 10 Black, while several models older, offers onboard image stabilization.
